After marriage, the question astrologers hear most is: "Which career suits me, and when will it take off?" Vedic astrology doesn't give you a job title. It describes the kind of work that suits your chart, the way you work, and the periods when career matters come to the fore.

The houses of career
- 10th house (Karma Bhava): your profession, status and reputation. This is the main career house.
- 6th house: daily work, service and competition. It's strong in the charts of employees, doctors, lawyers and anyone who works through competition.
- 7th house: business, trade, clients and partners. It's strong in the charts of entrepreneurs and consultants.
- 2nd and 11th houses: earnings and gains. The 2nd is money you keep; the 11th is income and networks.
- Together, the 2nd, 6th and 10th houses are called the artha trikona, the triangle of material success.
Step 1: The 10th house and its lord
Use the five-question check from our 12 houses article:
- The sign on the 10th house sets the style. Earth signs lean practical and structured; fire signs lead and compete; air signs communicate and analyse; water signs care, heal or work with the public.
- Where the 10th lord sits often shows the field. For example:
- 10th lord in the 2nd: finance, family business, speech, food.
- In the 5th: teaching, advisory, creative or speculative work.
- In the 6th: service, healthcare, law, competitive jobs.
- In the 7th: business, partnerships, client work.
- In the 9th: academia, law, religion, publishing, travel-linked work.
- In the 12th: foreign companies, hospitals, research, work abroad.
- Planets in the 10th house are prominent in your working life.
- Planets aspecting the 10th add their colour.
- Strength: an exalted or own-sign 10th lord in a Kendra or Trikona gives steadier results.
Step 2: Planets and professions
These are the traditional associations. Modern astrologers extend them to new fields:

Look at the 10th lord, planets in the 10th, and the strongest planet in the chart. When two or three point to the same field, that field is a strong candidate.
The Jaimini system adds the Amatyakaraka: the planet with the second-highest degree in any sign. It's treated as a career significator. It's a different school from Parashari, but many astrologers use it as a cross-check.
Step 3: Job or business?
These are tendencies, not rules:
- Leaning towards a job: a strong 6th house, the 10th lord connected to the 6th, and Saturn prominent.
- Leaning towards business: a strong 7th and 3rd house (partners and self-effort), the 10th lord linked to the 7th or 11th, and a strong Mercury or Mars.
- Many charts show both, often a job first and independent work later.
Step 4: Confirm with the D10
Read the D10 Dasamsa together with the 10th house. If the planets that describe your career in the main chart are also well placed in the D10, the promise is reliable. See divisional charts explained.
Step 5: Timing career changes
- Dasha: career events cluster in the periods of the 10th lord, planets in the 10th, the 6th or 7th lord (job or business), and the 11th lord (income).
- Transits: Saturn and Jupiter crossing or aspecting the 10th house or 10th lord often coincide with promotions, job changes or new responsibilities.

A realistic view
A chart can suggest what kind of work will feel natural and when change is more likely. It can't replace your skills, the job market or your own interest. Use it as one input alongside career counselling, not instead of it.
