"Will I go abroad?" and "Will I settle there?" are among the most common questions in Indian astrology today. The classical texts were written long before visas and work permits, but they talk a lot about journeys, living away from one's birthplace, and life in unfamiliar lands. Modern astrologers apply those same rules to foreign travel and settlement.

A useful distinction:
- Travel and study abroad show up mainly through the 9th and 3rd houses.
- Settling abroad usually needs a 12th house link together with a weakened hold of the 4th (home).
Planets involved
- Rahu: the main significator of foreign things, foreign cultures, and breaking with tradition. Rahu in the 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 12th house, or linked with their lords, is common in the charts of people living abroad.
- Moon: travel and restlessness, especially in watery signs.
- Saturn: long stays, and work in distant or difficult places.
- Ketu: detachment from one's roots.
- Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) and watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) on the key houses add to the tendency to move.
Common combinations astrologers look for
These are traditional indicators. The more that are present, the stronger the tendency:
- 4th lord in the 12th house, or the 12th lord in the 4th: home and foreign lands are linked.
- Lagna lord in the 12th, or the 12th lord in the Lagna: the person themselves is tied to distant places.
- 9th and 12th lords connected by conjunction, aspect or sign exchange: long journeys lead to living abroad.
- Rahu in the 12th, 4th or 9th house, or with the lords of these houses.
- The 10th lord in the 12th, or the 12th lord in the 10th: career abroad or with foreign companies.
- Several planets in the 12th house, or the 4th house under heavy malefic influence with a weak 4th lord.

Timing a move
- Dasha: moves tend to happen in the Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 12th lord, Rahu, planets in the 12th or 9th, or the 4th lord placed in the 12th. See how Vimshottari Dasha works.
- Transits: Saturn or Jupiter transiting the 12th or 9th house, or aspecting their lords, often coincides with the actual move.
- Travel vs settlement: a short 9th-house period might bring a trip or a degree abroad. A long Rahu or 12th-lord Mahadasha is more often linked with staying.
What a chart can't tell you
- Visa decisions, immigration rules and job markets change far faster than any chart. Treat astrological timing as one factor, not a green light.
- "Foreign" is relative: for someone already living abroad, the same combinations may show another move, or a return home.
- A strong 4th house doesn't mean you can't go abroad. It often means you stay closely connected to home, or return eventually.
- Never make an immigration or financial decision based on a prediction alone.
